CALIFORNIA PROP PARTY: NO ON 8
by yasi
WHAT IT IS: If passed into law, Prop 8 will be known as the “California Marriage Protection Act.” It is a proposed amendment to the California constitution and will appear on the ballot as “Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.”
WHAT WE THINK: This prop is ridiculous. Not only is the wording confusing (YES means no to gay marriage, NO means yes) the arguments provided by the proponents of prop 8 are absurd. Specifically the argument that if Prop 8 doesn’t pass and gay marriage is legalized, then children will learn “gayness” in school or something to that effect. The ads (featured below) show a young child coming home from school and excitedly telling Mommy about how she learned that a man can marry another man so she can marry a princess! Ok psychos. Just because it is legalized, gay marriage will not suddenly become a required subject in school. It won’t appear on a third grader’s schedule between math and recess. And horror of all horrors, should teachers mention the existance of a legally recognized marriage in school, what could happen? Imagine if they taught children that African-Americans have the same rights as Caucasians? Oh wait, they do. Even the California Superintendent of Schools came out and spoke against these ads, calling them despicable and completely inaccurate.
Prop 8 is a violation of fundamental human rights and must be struck down. VOTE NO ON PROP 8.
