Oh Henry.

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Even if you do not find him as amazingly attractive as I do (pit stains notwithstanding) you should definitely be up on Henry Rollins. Not only was he the best known singer of the seriously influential Los Angeles punk band Black Flag (replacing Dez Cadena who had replaced Ron Reyes who had replaced the equally amazing Keith Morris) he is an accomplished writer and speaker. He also has fantastic taste in music, drawing from a vast array of genres with the zeal of a fourteen year old fan and the sagacity afforded him by thirty-some years as a musician. He has a fantastic radio show every Tuesday night on Los Angeles radio station Indie 103.1 FM called “Harmony in My Head,” and for those of you with the misfortune (or fortune) of not living in the greater L.A area, you can stream it live on your computer from www.indie1031.com. The show does have a punk/hardcore slant, but Rollins also plays some amazing blues, jazz, reggae, and other goodness. For example, a sample playlist from his show might include the following:

The Teen Idles “I Drink Milk”
Duke Ellington “Washington Wobble (Take 1)”
Boston “Something About You”
The Damned “Neat Neat Neat” ***
Dinosaur Jr “In a Jar” ***
The Fall “Coach and Horses”
Deerhoof “Crow”
Generation X “Ready Steady Go”
The Meters “He Bite Me”

***Personal Favorites

He also put me on to Betty Davis, who was Miles’ wife for a year and an AH-mazing artist in her own right. It’s rumored she introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone which led to the greatness that is Bitches Brew. Her stuff is all gritty and sexy and raw. You can buy her albums on Amazon (Check out They Say I’m Different).

If you’re around a radio or your computer tonight from 8-10pm PST, I highly recommend you check out his show.
