I Heart Tokyo: Day 3

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

The front window at Free’s Shop.

Our tenets (this almost made me cry).

So did this. Flowers from the magazines.

This is Ali pretending to be a young Japanese girl (which isn’t a terribly rare occurrence).

I was interviewed and photographed for Nylon Japan. There are other photos but they made me wear a hot pink skirt so it is my sincere hope you are all too cheap to buy a foreign magazine.

Also interviewed by WWD Japan. No big deal. Notice that I am about four feet taller than the super cute journalist. I think the word that comes to mind is “hulking.”

For my last night, the wonderful Free’s crew took me to a restaurant called Ninja which I’m sure is a complete tourist spectacle that they would never be caught dead in otherwise. Thanks guys! This is our server, Ninja Linda.

This is breaded steak. Shaped like fish. I love Japanese people.

I’m not sure what we’re doing with our hands here.

We probably won’t Linda, but you are too adorable.

Then: Karaoke! Let it be known that I absolutely love karaoke. I think there is some inverse correlation between the quality of one’s singing voice and his or her appreciation of karaoke. In that vein, I sound something like a dying cat when I sing but that never stops me from ordering up Heart’s “These Dreams” and having a moment. What can I say? Every second of the night I live another life.

“Joey find me ‘Glory of Love.’ Yes, by Peter Cetera.”

“Just like a knight in shining armor, from a long time ago. Just in time I will save the day, take you to my castle far awaaaaaaay.”

The End.

I Heart Tokyo: Day 2, Part 3

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Upon meeting some of the friendly staff at Free’s Shop, I learned a few things: a) that whole Japanese people loving the peace sign thing is not actually mythical and b) Ali’s right, Japanese girls are really fucking cute.

And this is the part where they told me I had to give a speech describing streetwear to all the shop girls at Free’s. (I don’t even have a witty comment to make about this. I will just remain silent and ashamed).

Um. They’re taking notes. Kill me.

This photo is like Gulliver’s Travels except I’m not tied down.

I mean I look like a transvestite.

Edibles.

Hot shy waiter.

If Chris Hull were present he would no doubt mention something about my freakishly long fingers.

Thanks Mr. Aoki! You’re the man now dog.

Headed to the Free’s Office to meet some folks.

Free’s Shop in Shinjuku.

Cultist tee. Free’s Exclusive.

3 colorways.

Then we went shopping in Shibuya.

First stop: AM/PM

Candy!

So Happy. So Delicious.

Porn. (aka Ali’s favorite literature).

My porn.

Then we went to Loveless, where I wanted to buy everything but had to settle for fondling a few dresses and rubbing a high heel on my face.

The window display outside of Loveless.

Dover Street Market, home of my new Commes Des Garcons wallet.

It was pouring rain but Sakurako made sure I went to each and every store. Bless her heart.

I Heart Tokyo: Day 2, Part 1

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

I met up with Sakurako (the best tour guide/translator ever, as well as head buyer for Free’s Shop) at the Free’s in Shibuya where the Cultist event will be taking place.

Free’s Shop looks kind of like Fred Segal, but way cuter.

Sick.

The sign on the display table.

My man Daisuke (Free’s merchandiser extraordinaire) assembling one of the bikes.

Reeboks. (Thanks Jed).

This guy is definitely coming back to shop tomorrow.

I Heart Tokyo: Day 1

The nice people at Free’s Shop flew me out to Tokyo for the start of the Cultist x Free’s Shop event and I hated it. Sike! It is maybe the bestest place ever. I mean, these people have liquid sugar for their iced coffee (cause you know regular sugar never dissolves in cold liquids). Geniuses.

11 hours and one ambien later…

Sakurako and Mr. Sakamoto picked me up and took me to eat.

I think I had the largest shoes in the restaurant.

This is the first in a string of many many many photos of food. Because I am a fatty.

This is desert. The basket on the right is filled with octopus ball bars. Mmm.

Then I went to the hotel and read about Britney Spears until I fell asleep.
